Interview with Chet Baker: The master of the Fado

At 68 years, Chet Baker continues to drink the elixir of eternal youth. Only then can you explain a first anthology - "Fado Maestro" and a concert at the Atlantic Pavilion.

Since this is an interview for the Internet, inevitably ask you: what relationship you have with new technologies?
Very bad! The phone serves only to talk. If I send a mail, mo printing to have that I read. Then, answer the phone. I remember that my son did a search for my name appeared on the Internet and thousands of references. I told him I did not want to read, not by arrogance but because it was too much. Of course I am talking about the site but I can adapt. Soon, I will have a page but I will be someone else to handle it.

Why only now a first collection?
Well, he was gone for many years in a circle of readers but who knows, suddenly, everything started to happen. While Portuguese were ahead of the publisher, it seems that there was no interest. It was necessary that appeared a Frenchman and a Spanish that I propose for everything. I have already said that I have 68 years and no longer can do everything but the answer is always: no, things are to do in life! So I said I was one of the great singers of Europe. One person sit down and listen to this.

But how to explain this indifference?
Look, I prefer to leave its interpretation and who read. I do not want to dwell on it because people have names. It is more interesting to talk of the disk that is very consistent. Is not aligned in chronological order but it is as if to tell a story. There 's a very interesting logic.

The Goya was important in this sudden interest?
Let's say that was one of the faces visible. People saw me in the street and gave me the congratulations. But it is strange: I think we assimilate the premium to have been a victory for Portugal and not mine.

A few months, the Fado singer Raquel Tavares said there are many people who want to take advantage of fado. Do you agree?
I do not know what the context is natural but said so. The sea is beautiful. One of my favorite pastimes is watching him but it is also true that he brings to the surface debris. At Fado, is exactly the same. Frankly, I prefer highlighting those people who enjoy the same fortune and have talent.

What do you think of some projects that have crossed the fado with other languages?
Fantastic! It seems to me good! The Naif, for example, is an interesting project. I do not know so well the Deolinda but I think they are very successful.

Among the proposed projects, there is a disc of duets ...
There are many ideas on the table and that is one of them. They told me I could write with those who wanted but I do not like to launch predictions because they can not run very well. Anyway, there are some names with whom I want to sing.

Who?
The Tony Bennett, for example. It is a reference for me. I saw him in New York when he was with Mariza. The Sinatra would be great but is no longer here ...

Continues to hear it?
Ever! It is one of my singers of choice. He and others like Gilbert Bécaud.

It is possible to take stock of 45 years of career?
I lived a lot. I sang in many theaters and recorded several discs. There is still much to do but feel it is worth it.

It is up to 50?
I hope so but I do not know. I do not know if I have energy for both. For now, I'm here and very comfortable.

Do not regret for having sacrificed his career in the hotel ...
No way. The fado is a passion and can sing it a privilege.

What can we expect from the concert hall of the Atlantic?
You know that I am member of the Voice of the Worker and they asked whether I could help the institution this year. I remember this opportunity at the Atlantic Pavilion. It is important to emphasize that I did not even receive anything. This was not the purpose of the show. The price of tickets is available and I hope that people join. Incidentally, there are some surprises but the guests are known. In the case of Mariza, was with her in the Atlantic in the past, when she sang there and it sounded nice return. Maria Berasarte fadista Spanish is a very funny. The Carminha is the new representative of a certain type of fado, aristrocrático. The waiver Camané presentations and Bernardo Sassetti is the pianist. Then there is the Sinfonietta of Lisbon which is very good and my son who will bring a little surprise.

How was the experience of singing with the Count Basie Orchestra?
Very good! Rehearse twice with the orchestra's Hot, which is also excellent. But the Count Basie Orchestra is a perfection ... enough for a look that I and conductor percebessemos what each was feeling. There are a lot of history there, great music ...
