New stoppage could affect the delivery of the Oscars ceremony
Between the months of November 2007 and February 2008, the strike of screenwriters stopped Holly-wood. A new event may be imminent, since the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMTP) canceled the contract negotiations, after the process has reached an impasse.
The players are Americans five months ago to work on the basis of the terms of a labor contract that expired in July, and the direction of SAG wants now that its members vote in favor of a possible strike. This measure will only be approved if 75% of 120 thousand members of the union are in favor. But Alan Rosenberg, the president of SAG, said that event will gather the votes needed to halt will not be immediate. The ceremony for delivery of the Oscars, on the other hand, could be affected by the strike.
"Our members must unite and let the national committee negotiating a new agreement, using the threat of strike," explained a representative of SAG. "We have made many sacrifices in order to reach an agreement but continue to insist on a number of terms that we can not accept."
The problem continues to bust-up with the payments of duties on the sale of DVDs and the exploitation of new business models such as the Internet. These were some of the claims which led to the paralysis of the screenwriters is already a year. The SAG intends to launch "a large-scale educational campaign to" to unite its members. And the second one the British press, George Clooney, who in the summer said the strike would be the last option, must now vote in favor.
The AMTP, which represents the major Hollywood studios, has called this strategy of "irresponsible". Indeed, the current economic scenario, marked by the crisis, would not be favorable to such measures. The heads also recalled the impact that the paralysis of the scriptwriters had on the economy of Los Angeles.
